Brian Mago makes European Super Cup history in Aston Villa draw with Paris Saint-Germain

Aston Villa teenager Brian Mago became the youngest player to score in European Super Cup history after equalising against Paris Saint-Germain in a 1-1 draw at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old striker, who was making his first start in the competition, struck in the 45th minute to cancel out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener for the French side.

Mago met a cross from Scotland international John McGinn and found the net shortly before half-time, ensuring Aston Villa went into the interval level with Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Opta, Mago was 17 years and 212 days old when he scored. His appearance also made him the youngest player ever to start a European Super Cup match since the modern competition’s records began in 2006.

The teenager was born in London on 12 January 2009 to Cameroonian parents and plays as a forward. His record-breaking goal came after he had already attracted attention during pre-season with Aston Villa.

Mago scored twice in a 5-0 friendly victory over Walsall before also finding the target against Real Sociedad. Those performances followed his move to Aston Villa from French club Metz in January 2026.

Reports at the time valued the transfer at about 12m euros, with the deal completed after Mago impressed in youth football. His rapid rise has continued since joining the Premier League club, with his European Super Cup start marking another significant milestone.

Before moving to England, Mago began his football development in academies in Luxembourg. He joined Metz in 2023 and, in August 2025, became the youngest player in the club’s history to appear in a Ligue 1 match, aged 16 years and 217 days.

Mago also has an unusual international background. He represented Luxembourg at senior level before later playing for England Under-17s. Because he was born in London, he remains eligible to represent England’s senior team in the future.

His goal against Paris Saint-Germain adds to a series of age records established during a career that has developed quickly across several countries. It also gave Aston Villa a share of the result after Kvaratskhelia had put the French team ahead in the 20th minute.

Kvaratskhelia’s goal had given Paris Saint-Germain control during the opening period, but Aston Villa responded before the break through their teenage forward. Mago’s finish not only restored parity but also placed his name in the history of one of European football’s most prominent one-off fixtures.
