Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United name teams for Betway Premiership clash

Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United have announced their starting line-ups for a Betway Premiership meeting at FNB Stadium, with former Chiefs co-head coach Cedric Kaze returning to face his former club.

Kaizer Chiefs will be seeking an immediate response after suffering a disappointing 1-0 defeat by Golden Arrows in the MTN8 quarter-finals at the weekend.

Fernando Da Cruz’s team made a strong start to their league campaign, beating newly promoted Kruger United 3-1 in their opening match. However, they will be aiming to recover their momentum in front of their home supporters against a Sekhukhune United side that arrives in Johannesburg with confidence.

Babina Noko opened their league season with a 1-0 victory over Durban City before progressing from the MTN8 quarter-finals with an absorbing 4-3 extra-time win against AmaZulu.

The match also marks a return to FNB Stadium for Cedric Kaze, who was part of the Kaizer Chiefs technical team last season. His knowledge of the Amakhosi squad and their qualities adds an extra dimension to an already important fixture.

Kaizer Chiefs have had the better of the most recent meeting between the two clubs, winning 2-0 away from home in May. Sekhukhune United have, however, previously demonstrated that they can cause problems for Amakhosi at FNB Stadium, leaving Wednesday’s contest difficult to predict.

Maboe and Mthethwa are included in midfield, while Velebayi, Baartman, Phili and Ighodaro complete the starting XI.

Kaizer Chiefs’ substitutes are Leaner, Monyane, Nkgwesa, Moloisane, Ndlovu, Mmodi, Da Silva, Shabalala and Vilakazi.

Sekhukhune United’s starting XI has not yet been confirmed. No substitutes have been listed for Babina Noko.

The fixture gives both teams an opportunity to build on their opening league victories, although Kaizer Chiefs will want to put the disappointment of their MTN8 exit behind them. Sekhukhune United, meanwhile, will hope their extra-time success over AmaZulu can carry into their league campaign as they face a Kaizer Chiefs side determined to respond at home.
