Kalvin Phillips seals Sheffield United return on loan from Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips will spend the 2026/27 season with Sheffield United after completing a second consecutive loan move to the Championship club.

Manchester City confirmed the agreement on Tuesday, with Phillips returning to the club for the remainder of the current summer transfer window on a season-long deal.

“Kalvin Phillips has today rejoined Sheffield United on a season-long loan,” Manchester City said in a statement published on the club’s official website.

The 30-year-old initially moved to Sheffield United in February 2026 for the second half of the 2025/26 campaign. However, his spell was cut short after he suffered a knee injury.

“Unfortunately, the combative midfielder made just three appearances before suffering a knee injury which ruled him out for the rest of the season,” Manchester City added.

Phillips has now signed a contract covering the 2026/27 season and will remain at Sheffield United for a second spell. The move gives him another opportunity to rebuild his fitness and playing time after a series of loan spells since leaving his boyhood club.

The midfielder established his reputation at Leeds United, where he spent eight seasons playing at Elland Road. His performances there earned him a move to Manchester City in the summer of 2022.

Phillips made 21 appearances for Manchester City during his first season at the club and was part of the side that completed a historic treble. City won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the 2022/23 campaign.

He featured 10 times for City the following season before joining West Ham United on loan in January 2024 for the remainder of the campaign.

At the beginning of the next season, Phillips moved to newly promoted Ipswich Town for the 2024/25 campaign.

His opportunities at Manchester City have remained limited since his arrival, although he did come off the bench in the club’s 2-0 Carabao Cup third-round victory over Huddersfield Town at the Etihad Stadium last season before moving to Sheffield United.

Overall, Phillips has made 32 appearances for Manchester City and scored once. His only goal for the club came against Red Star Belgrade during their 2023/24 Champions League campaign.

The new loan agreement means Phillips will continue his career away from the Etihad Stadium while seeking regular football with Sheffield United in the Championship.
