Barcelona confirm Roony Bardghji has suffered an ACL tear

Barcelona have confirmed that winger Roony Bardghji has suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and will undergo surgery in the coming days.

The 20-year-old sustained the injury during Barcelona training on Monday. Spanish newspaper Sport had reported earlier that Bardghji had ruptured his ACL, before the club formally announced the extent of the injury.

Barcelona added that the problem has occurred in the same leg in which Bardghji previously suffered an injury.

The setback comes during a difficult period for Bardghji, who was told by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick several days ago that he did not form part of his plans. As a result, the winger was left out of the squad for the club’s pre-season trips to face Nottingham Forest and Udinese.

Bardghji had spent the opening weeks of pre-season attempting to persuade Flick of his qualities. He joined Barcelona from Copenhagen last summer and made 28 appearances for the club in all competitions during the previous campaign, scoring two goals.

The Sweden international, who has Syrian heritage, had been trying to establish himself in Flick’s plans before the knee injury brought his preparations to an abrupt end. Barcelona’s announcement means he now faces a period of rehabilitation after surgery, although the club has not given a timescale for his return.

Bardghji’s injury was officially confirmed by Barcelona on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, after the initial report from Sport. The club said the operation would take place in the coming days.

His omission from the matches against Nottingham Forest and Udinese had already signalled that he was not currently central to Flick’s plans. Bardghji had nevertheless continued to work during pre-season in an effort to change the manager’s view of his position within the squad.

The winger joined Barcelona from Copenhagen last summer after establishing his career with the Danish club. In his first season with Barcelona, he featured 28 times across all competitions and found the net twice.

The latest injury now leaves Barcelona waiting for further medical information following surgery, while Bardghji begins the recovery process from damage to the ACL in his right knee.
