Al Jazira’s Olaroiu relishing high-pressure start against Al-Ittihad

Cosmin Olaroiu says Al Jazira’s AFC Champions League Elite meeting with Al-Ittihad will provide an early and important measure of his team’s capabilities, with the result helping to determine the direction of the entire season.

The two sides meet on Tuesday at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi in the preliminary round for a place in the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite.

For Olaroiu, the match represents more than a chance to progress in the competition. The Romanian, who has taken charge of Al Jazira, believes the strength of the opposition and the pressure surrounding the fixture will reveal how prepared his squad is at this stage of the campaign.

“Al-Ittihad is a very good test for us. We will find out where we stand, what we need to do, what our real capabilities are and who can deal well with pressure,” Olaroiu told Abu Dhabi Sports Channels.

He said the occasion would allow Al Jazira to assess the squad in circumstances that could not be fully replicated in training or less demanding fixtures.

“It is a big challenge, but at the same time the match is an excellent opportunity to evaluate the group in the best possible way,” he added.

The timing of the game makes the challenge even more demanding, with the fixture coming at the beginning of the season. However, Olaroiu said there was little value in focusing on the scheduling of the match because his side had no control over it.

Asked about taking on such a strong opponent so early in the campaign, he said: “We cannot change anything. We have to deal with it as a test that shows us who we are at this stage.”

Olaroiu believes the information gained from the match will help Al Jazira establish more clearly what it must improve in the weeks and months ahead. The team’s performance, he said, will offer clues about its identity, its level of readiness and the areas that require further work.

“After this match, we will know more precisely where we want to go, what needs to change and what we have to work on. Matches like this will give us many important indications,” he said.

The game is also significant because it marks Olaroiu’s first official match as Al Jazira’s head coach. The same applies to Jens Wissing, who will lead Al-Ittihad in an official fixture for the first time.

That shared change in the dugouts adds another layer of uncertainty to a match which will decide who advances to the league stage of Asia’s leading club competition. For Al Jazira, the contest will serve as an immediate examination of a new team under a new manager, while Olaroiu will look for evidence that his players can respond effectively when the pressure is at its highest.
