Egypt coach receives two-match ban and $47,000 fine over Argentina protest

Egypt goalkeeping coach Saafan Al-Saghir has been suspended for two matches and fined $47,000 by FIFA following his conduct during the Pharaohs’ controversial 2026 World Cup defeat by Argentina.

Egyptian website Yalla Kora quoted a source within the Egyptian Football Association as confirming the details of the punishment.

“The penalty issued by FIFA against Saafan Al-Saghir includes a suspension for two matches, in addition to a financial fine of $47,000, due to the events that took place during the Egypt-Argentina match in the round of 16 of the World Cup.”

Al-Saghir’s suspension means he will be unavailable to the Egypt technical staff for two matches as a result of the disciplinary action.

The substantial financial penalty adds further consequences for the goalkeeping coach, who was dismissed during the match after his reaction to decisions made by the referee.
