Five South African footballers ready to make their mark abroad

A new generation of South African footballers is beginning to establish itself in prominent leagues overseas, with five Mzansi prospects attracting particular attention ahead of the upcoming season.

Improved performances by Bafana Bafana in recent years have coincided with a rise in the number of South African players competing abroad. Campbell facing key season in Belgium

After finding opportunities limited at Club Brugge last season, Campbell has moved to fellow Belgian top-flight side KV Kortrijk.

Dithejane building quietly in Chicago

Dithejane has not attracted the same level of attention as his fellow South African and Chicago Fire team-mate Mbekezeli Mbokazi, but his steady development has been an important feature of his progress.

The player has earned opportunities by learning patiently and improving away from the spotlight. Last month, he scored his first goal for Chicago Fire in a 3-2 defeat by Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Makhanya recently completed a move from Philadelphia Union to Rangers in Scotland, a switch that could provide a significant platform for the defender.

Mofokeng played a leading role in Orlando Pirates’ success last season, helping the club win the league and end Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance of the domestic game. His contribution was recognised when he was named Player of the Season.

He is expected to receive regular playing time at Union, who are aiming to win the Belgian Pro League after finishing runners-up to Club Brugge last term.
