Belgium secured its place in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil after defeating Croatia 1-2. While Christian Benteke, the key figure in Belgium’s attack during the qualifiers, watched the match from the bench, Romelu Lukaku took the spotlight by scoring both Belgian goals. Benteke, who has been recovering from a hip injury sustained in the league, participated in his first team training session on Sunday.
Coach Marc Wilmots hopes to include Benteke in the lineup for the final group match against Wales, which promises to be recreational, but Benteke remains cautious. “If I feel good, I would like to play, but I will not take any risks, especially since qualification is assured,” he mentioned after the Sunday training session, which attracted around 10,000 supporters.
Belgium will face Wales at the King Baudouin Stadium in the last match of the European zone qualifiers for the Brazilian World Cup on Tuesday.
