Ghanaian forward Jerry Afriyie set to join KRC Genk as Al-Qadsiah complete €6m sale

Ghanaian youngster Jerry Afriyie is set to continue his development in Europe after Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah agreed to sell the highly rated striker to Belgian club Genk for a reported €6 million.

The 19-year-old forward joined Al-Qadsiah from Ghanaian second-tier side Thoughts FC for just under €1 million, with the Saudi club identifying him as one of the promising young talents in African football.

Rather than keeping Afriyie in the first-team setup immediately, Al-Qadsiah opted for a development-focused approach, sending him out on loan spells in Europe.

The Ghanaian spent time with CD Lugo in Spain before moving to Belgian side La Louvière, gaining valuable experience and exposure to European football.

Just 18 months after investing less than €1 million in his signing, Al-Qadsiah are now poised to make a substantial profit on the Ghanaian forward, with his transfer to Genk reportedly worth €6 million.

The deal represents a significant increase in Afriyie’s market value and highlights the growing importance of Saudi clubs in identifying, developing and eventually selling young players.

Al-Qadsiah have increasingly placed emphasis on scouting emerging talents and developing them with the potential for both sporting and financial returns. Afriyie’s impending move to Genk is another example of that strategy in practice.

The Saudi club previously demonstrated a similar approach with Argentine midfielder Equi Fernández, who eventually moved to German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
