Felix Sanchez talks with South Korea cast doubt over Algeria appointment

Felix Sanchez’s expected appointment as Algeria manager has been thrown into doubt after the former Qatar head coach reportedly held discussions with the South Korean Football Association.

Sanchez had appeared close to taking charge of Algeria after reaching an agreement with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) on several key aspects of the proposed deal. However, El Hayat reports that the Spanish coach also negotiated with South Korea in recent days.

South Korea are searching for a new manager following the departure of Hong Myung-bo after a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign, which ended in the group stage.

The latest development has unsettled the FAF, which had regarded Sanchez as the leading candidate to replace Vladimir Petkovic. Talks between the two parties had reportedly covered the terms of his contract and the make-up of his coaching staff.

Sanchez’s decision to keep discussions open with another national team has prompted the Algerian federation to widen its search. Rather than rely solely on his response, the FAF is now working on several alternatives as it attempts to reach a final decision.

According to the same report, the federation spoke on Monday to a Portuguese manager and an Italian coach. Their identities have not been disclosed.

The move reflects the FAF’s desire to maintain several active options until the final stages of the process. Sanchez remains under consideration, but his position as the clear favourite has been weakened by the parallel talks and earlier concerns about his management style.

The federation also recently re-established contact with Rafael Benitez. The former Liverpool manager is understood to have lowered his financial demands and accepted a number of concessions in an effort to revive his chances of securing the role.

Despite that renewed contact, however, the FAF has reportedly closed Benitez’s case. Four coaches are now believed to remain seriously in contention to lead the Fennecs.

Sanchez’s profile continues to appeal to Algeria. His tactical approach, international experience and record of working with young players remain important qualities in the eyes of the federation.

He previously managed Qatar and is still viewed as a strong candidate, but the uncertainty surrounding his current position has changed the picture. The reported negotiations with South Korea have added to existing reservations about his leadership, leaving the appointment less straightforward than it appeared in recent days.

The FAF wants to complete the process quickly and is expected to announce the new manager before 20 August. Sanchez is still in the running, although he no longer appears to have the same advantage over the remaining candidates.
