Mohamed Salah drives Trabzonspor season-ticket surge after free transfer

Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan says the Turkish Super Lig club needs to sell only 7,000 more season tickets to cover the full cost of signing Mohamed Salah as a free agent.

Salah’s arrival has already produced a significant financial impact, with the club claiming that 18,000 season tickets were sold within three days of the deal being confirmed last week.

Dogan said Trabzonspor would fully recover its investment if total sales reached 25,000. The Egyptian forward has joined on a huge salary which reportedly makes him the highest-paid player in Turkey.

The figures underline the immediate commercial effect of a transfer which has generated considerable excitement among Trabzonspor supporters. The club confirmed Salah’s signing as a free agent last week, and the response was reflected in the sharp rise in season-ticket sales.

Salah was given a hero’s welcome earlier in the week, first at the airport and later at Trabzonspor’s stadium. Large numbers of supporters gathered at both locations to show their support for the former Liverpool forward.

Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish top flight last season and will have to win a play-off to qualify for the Europa League campaign this season. The club also hopes Salah’s arrival can help it challenge for the league title, which was won most recently by Galatasaray.

However, former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has been surprised by Salah’s decision to move to Trabzonspor. Saunders played in the Super Lig himself, but believes the 34-year-old could have aimed for a higher-profile destination.

Salah could have remained at Liverpool for another 12 months, with his contract running until 2027. Despite that agreement, it was decided by mutual consent that the time had come for the player to leave the club.

Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad had also shown an interest in signing Salah and could have offered him a higher salary. The Egypt international instead chose to remain in Europe and continue his career with Trabzonspor.

The transfer has therefore brought both sporting ambition and an immediate commercial boost to the Turkish club. Trabzonspor are targeting a title challenge after finishing third last season, while the prospect of European football remains dependent on the outcome of their play-off.

For now, the early ticket-sale figures have provided the clearest indication of Salah’s influence away from the pitch. According to Dogan, only 7,000 additional season-ticket purchases are required for the club to recoup the cost of its new signing, after 18,000 sales were recorded in the first three days.
