Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg enters Real Madrid’s midfield debate

Real Madrid are considering whether to recruit another midfielder after the collapse of their pursuit of Rodri, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg emerging as a name suggested to the Spanish club.

The proposal has come from Spanish radio station Cadena SER rather than from Real Madrid’s hierarchy, and there is no indication at present that the club have made a formal approach for the 31-year-old Olympique de Marseille player.

Rodri’s impending move to Barcelona has been viewed as a significant setback for Real Madrid. The club missed out on an exceptional player at a time when midfield remains one of the areas most in need of strengthening, while the prospect of him joining their traditional rivals has added to the disappointment.

In the immediate aftermath of the failed deal, media reports in Madrid suggested the development could bring an end to Real Madrid’s summer transfer activity. That view has since changed, with increasing indications that the club will continue searching for a different midfield option.

Jose Mourinho appeared to reinforce that possibility on Saturday after his side’s 2-1 friendly victory over Ferencvaros.

“We want a smaller squad, with 20 players plus the injured players, such as Rodrygo, Militao and Ferland. But we also need a new player capable of doing what Bernardo does, which is playing in several positions in midfield,” he said.

The comments were interpreted as an indirect attempt to encourage the club’s decision-makers to add another midfielder to the squad.

Since then, reports in the Madrid-based press have combined confirmed information with speculation over potential targets. Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Kees Smit of AZ Alkmaar have been mentioned repeatedly, while Ayoub Bouaddi has also featured in discussions.

However, the available indications suggest the Morocco international is set to join Manchester City.

Cadena SER has now put forward Højbjerg as another possible solution. The Denmark international, who previously played for Bayern Munich, would offer a different profile from the younger midfielders being discussed.

Højbjerg is regarded as a physically stronger option who can cope with high-tempo matches and provide positional discipline. While he does not possess the same development potential as Wharton or Bouaddi, his experience could give Real Madrid greater energy, balance and authority in an area where the club are seeking to recover some of their identity.

His relatively low potential cost compared with the other alternatives has also been highlighted as an important factor.

Real Madrid have yet to show that Højbjerg is a genuine target, and the suggestion currently remains just that: a recommendation from Cadena SER rather than evidence of active negotiations.

The midfielder’s future could nevertheless become the subject of further interest, with Newcastle also targeting Højbjerg. Whether Real Madrid act on the latest proposal will depend on the club’s assessment of their midfield needs and the alternatives available in the transfer market.
