Guy Bukasa set to leave Al Hilal after Josef Zinnbauer’s appointment

Guy Bukasa is unlikely to remain as head coach of Al Hilal SC following the appointment of German coach Josef Zinnbauer, with the two sides yet to reach an agreement over the future of the Congolese coach.

Al Hilal’s leadership is keen for Bukasa to remain at the club and is understood to have offered him a role as part of Zinnbauer’s backroom staff.

Bukasa, however, is reluctant to accept the proposal as he believes his recent work with the Sudanese champions has earned him the opportunity to take charge of his own team.

The coach played a key role in Al Hilal’s campaign at the recently concluded CECAFA Kagame Cup, guiding the club to a bronze medal after an impressive run in the competition.

Under Bukasa, Al Hilal played five matches, recording three wins, one draw and one defeat. The team scored nine goals and conceded only three during the tournament.

Those results have strengthened Bukasa’s belief that he is ready for another opportunity as a head coach rather than remaining as an assistant within Zinnbauer’s technical team.

Zinnbauer was recently appointed as Al Hilal’s new head coach as the club prepares for another demanding campaign, including its participation in continental competition.

The German tactician is expected to bring his own technical team and begin preparations for the new season, leaving Al Hilal’s leadership with a decision to make regarding Bukasa.

The club would prefer to retain the coach because of his contribution and recent performances, but Bukasa’s desire to lead his own team could make his departure increasingly likely.

A final decision on Bukasa’s future is expected in the coming hours.

Should he leave, his successful spell at Al Hilal could attract interest from other clubs looking for a coach with recent experience in African club competition.
