Senegal’s Mendy reportedly at odds with Al-Ahli chief over squad decisions
Senegal international goalkeeper Édouard Mendy’s future at Al-Ahli has reportedly become uncertain following a dispute with the Saudi club’s sporting director, Roy Pedro.
According to sources cited by Tribuna.com, Pedro has become increasingly frustrated with the former Chelsea goalkeeper, accusing him of becoming involved in transfer and squad matters beyond his responsibilities as a player.
The disagreement is understood to have affected the relationship between the two men and could potentially lead to Mendy leaving the club.
Mendy involved in squad discussions
Reports suggest Mendy recently held discussions with several senior Al-Ahli players about the team’s needs during the current transfer window.
Those conversations reportedly led the players to identify the need for a new midfielder as a priority before the transfer window closes.
A request was subsequently made to the club’s management to strengthen the position.
Pedro is said to have quickly linked the initiative to Mendy and was unhappy that the goalkeeper had become involved in discussions concerning the club’s recruitment strategy.
The sporting director reportedly believes such decisions fall outside Mendy’s responsibilities within the squad.
Relationship reportedly deteriorates
The disagreement has reportedly caused the relationship between Mendy and Pedro to deteriorate significantly.
Sources claim Pedro now wants the Senegal international removed from the club, putting further doubt over the goalkeeper’s future in Saudi Arabia.
Mendy has been an important figure for Al-Ahli since joining the club after his spell at Chelsea, where he established himself as one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers.
The 34-year-old also remains a key member of the Senegal national team, having played an important role in the country’s recent international campaigns.
Uncertain future in Saudi Arabia
For now, it remains unclear whether the dispute will result in Mendy leaving Al-Ahli before the transfer window closes.
The situation could depend on whether the two sides are able to resolve their differences or whether the club decides to act on Pedro’s reported desire to move the goalkeeper on.
Mendy’s status will therefore be one to watch as Al-Ahli continue their preparations for the new season.
