Zion Suzuki agreement sharpens Paris Saint-Germain’s goalkeeping dilemma

Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki for €35m, according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, just hours after confirming the arrival of Lucas Digne from Aston Villa.

The proposed move for Suzuki is expected to be completed soon if the remaining steps proceed as planned. However, the Japan international’s potential arrival raises an immediate question for head coach Luis Enrique: will he be installed as Paris Saint-Germain’s first-choice goalkeeper, or will he initially be expected to gain experience with a team competing in European competitions?

Paris Saint-Germain are looking for a new goalkeeper after Gianluigi Donnarumma’s departure. The position is regarded as the weakest area of Luis Enrique’s squad, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

The French champions signed Lucas Chevalier, but the French goalkeeper failed to meet expectations. As a result, Matvey Safonov eventually became the team’s starting goalkeeper.

Despite that development, the club believe Safonov’s performances have shown he is capable of remaining in the starting XI. That means any new goalkeeper would not necessarily arrive as the automatic number one.

Suzuki is viewed as the ideal candidate in that situation. The 23-year-old is Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup and currently plays for Parma. Paris Saint-Germain have already agreed a deal worth €35m to bring him to the French capital, according to Romano.

The proposed transfer would give Luis Enrique another option in goal while preserving the possibility of Safonov continuing as the starter. Whether Suzuki is immediately promoted ahead of the Russian goalkeeper, or is given time to adapt before taking on that responsibility, remains undecided.

The agreement comes on the same day that Paris Saint-Germain announced the signing of Digne. The 33-year-old France international has joined from Aston Villa on a three-year contract running until the summer of 2029.

The transfer is reportedly worth about €7m and marks Digne’s return to the French capital 10 years after he left. His arrival makes him Paris Saint-Germain’s third signing of the summer transfer window.

Digne’s move was confirmed on Sunday, with the club announcing the deal officially before the report emerged about Suzuki. The two developments indicate that Paris Saint-Germain are continuing to strengthen their squad while also addressing the uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper position.

Suzuki’s agreement is not yet described as a completed transfer, but the expectation is that it will be finalised shortly. The central issue for the club will then be deciding how quickly the Japanese goalkeeper should be introduced to the starting team.

For now, Safonov remains capable of keeping his place, while Suzuki would offer Paris Saint-Germain an alternative who has been identified as the preferred solution to their goalkeeping concerns.
