Real Madrid’s summer selection battle intensifies after Mourinho sets 20-player target

Real Madrid strengthened the case for a successful pre-season by beating Hungarian side Ferencvarosi 2-1 on Saturday, but manager Jose Mourinho’s insistence on working with a squad of about 20 players has placed several high-profile names under pressure.

The Spanish club controlled much of the friendly and ultimately secured a positive result, despite facing some difficulties after half-time. It was their second serious test of the 2016/27 campaign and a demanding one, with Ferencvarosi already at peak competitive sharpness after playing in the Europa League qualifiers and completing two league matches.

Mourinho’s players came through the challenge and have two further fixtures in which to continue their preparations, against Deportivo La Coruna and Schalke.

According to Marca, the stalled move for Rodri in recent days has focused attention on the size and balance of Real Madrid’s squad. Mourinho made his intentions clear as soon as the team arrived in Hungary, saying: “We want a small squad, around 20 players.”

That early declaration has removed much of the uncertainty surrounding his plans. However, the manager must also deal with a recurring problem at the club: a long injury list that continues to fill the treatment room from one week to the next.

Mourinho has already had to contend with Dean Huijsen’s injury, as well as problems affecting Marco Asensio and Thiago Pitarch. Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo have also been unavailable, and the manager referred to those absences during his post-match news conference.

Even with the current injuries taken into account, Real Madrid appear to have two players for almost every position, and in some areas they have three possible options.

The goalkeeping department is secure, with Andriy Lunin available as the alternative. There is also considerable choice at full-back. Marc Cucurella, Alvaro Carreras, Denzel Dumfries, Trent Alexander-Arnold and, when required, Mendy can provide cover across both flanks.

Central defence is another area where the club has an extra player. Following the arrival of Ibrahima Konate, Asensio has become the fifth-choice centre-back. That is one reason his name has been linked with a possible departure.

A similar numbers problem exists in defensive midfield. Aurelien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde, Bernardo Silva, Eduardo Camavinga and Thiago Pitarch are competing for two positions. Five players chasing two places would leave Mourinho with a demanding rotation decision throughout the season.

The attacking positions are even more crowded. Vinicius Junior is the leading option on the left, while Rodrygo is expected to return to his customary role once he recovers. On the right, the choices include Diomande and Brahim Diaz, with Endrick also capable of playing there. Valverde could be used in that position if circumstances required it.

Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler are possible options through the middle. At centre-forward, Kylian Mbappe represents the main threat to opposing defences, supported by Espi and potentially Endrick if the Brazilian decides to remain and compete for a place in the starting line-up.

The figures suggest only six players would have a secondary role, one that could become almost negligible if Mourinho remains true to his stated preference for a compact squad. The disadvantage is clear: several stars may be forced to wait on the bench for their opportunity.

That is the price of building a team designed for excellence rather than simply filling gaps. Yet summer plans rarely survive a full season unchanged. Recent history has shown that injuries remain a problem Real Madrid have been unable to eliminate, and that vulnerability can force the club into emergency decisions or lead it to rely on a youth academy that is consistently ready to give everything when called upon.
