Mamelodi Sundowns turn it around to lead Polokwane City at half-time

Mamelodi Sundowns recovered from an early setback to take a 2-1 half-time lead over Polokwane City in the MTN8 at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

Polokwane City, known as Rise and Shine, made the stronger start and went ahead after only seven minutes. Sundowns failed to deal with a set-piece, allowing Bonginkosi Dlamini to arrive unmarked at the far post and finish from a tight angle.

The hosts gradually settled into the match and drew level in the 20th minute. New signing Antonio van Wyk picked out Teboho Mokoena, who moved beyond one challenge before sending his shot into the bottom corner.

Sundowns completed the turnaround shortly after the half-hour mark when Van Wyk capitalised on an error by Tlou Nkwe. The forward kept his composure to slot the ball home, opening his account for The Brazilians on his debut and giving the home support plenty to celebrate.

Miguel Cardoso selected Grant Kekana and Kegan Johannes as his central defensive pairing, while Fawaaz Basadien was given a rare start at left-back.

Cardoso’s side went into the interval ahead despite their sluggish opening, with Van Wyk making an immediate impact after joining the club. Polokwane City will have to respond after conceding twice following their early advantage.

Mamelodi Sundowns started with Ronwen Williams in goal, with Khuliso Mudau, Kegan Johannes, Grant Kekana and Fawaaz Basadien forming the defensive line. Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende featured in midfield, alongside Jayden Matthews, while Antonio van Wyk and B. Mokoena completed the starting XI.

Their substitutes were Ismail Watenga Goss, Khuliso Khoza, Aubrey Modiba, Mdunyelwa, Sphelele Mkhulise, Zwane, Letlhaku and Mothiba.

Polokwane City named Mathebula as their goalkeeper. Their outfield starters were Manthosi, Tlou Nkwe, Nkaki, Ramaja, Kambala, Maphangule, Bathlabane, Bonginkosi Dlamini, Philander and Molokwane.

Polokwane City’s substitutes were Ngwenya, Mashele, Modise, Nikani, Kelepu, Daniels, Mnguni, Matube and Khosa.

The MTN8 contest remains finely poised at the break, but Sundowns have the advantage after turning a poor start into a one-goal lead.
