SAFA approve Pitso Mosimane as Hugo Broos’ successor for Bafana Bafana

Pitso Mosimane has been approved as the new Bafana Bafana head coach by the South African Football Association’s National Executive Committee (NEC), although SAFA says a formal announcement will follow next week.

The decision was taken during an extraordinary NEC meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August 2026. Mosimane has been backed to return to the South African senior men’s national team and replace Hugo Broos, who announced his departure from the head coach position last month after leading Bafana Bafana to the FIFA World Cup Last 32 in July.

SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan said some final matters still needed to be completed before the appointment could be officially announced.

“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week,” said SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan following the NEC Extraordinary Meeting.

Mosimane’s approval comes after Bafana Bafana returned from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the team reached the second round of the competition for the first time in the country’s history.

South Africa also qualified for the global tournament for the first time in 24 years. Their historic progress to the knockout stage was secured with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico.

Thapelo Maseko scored the only goal of that match, helping Bafana Bafana advance beyond the group stage at the 2026 global showpiece.

The NEC meeting was described by SAFA as successful, with discussions covering the appointment and other matters considered by the organisation’s Members. Dr Jordaan chaired the proceedings and said the discussions were robust and engaging.

The SAFA president added that the Members considered all the items on the agenda with the same level of commitment they routinely bring to NEC meetings.

Mosimane is therefore set to take charge of Bafana Bafana following Broos’ departure. However, SAFA has not yet formally confirmed the appointment, with the association expected to make that announcement next week after the remaining details have been finalised.

A statement from SAFA said: “The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach.”

It added that SAFA had held a successful NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday and that its Members had backed Mosimane to return to the national side and replace Broos, who stepped down a few days ago.

The approval follows a period of major progress for Bafana Bafana. The team’s qualification for the second round in 2026 was the first time South Africa had achieved that at the FIFA World Cup, while their qualification for the tournament itself ended a 24-year wait.
