2014 WORLD CUP: THE SENEGALESE “ARE ALREADY MOURNING BRAZIL”

The 3-1 defeat of the Lions of Senegal in Abidjan during the first leg of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers has led to significant disappointment among the Senegalese population. Many have already conceded that their hopes for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil have come to an end.

Moussa Ndao, a former Senegalese footballer, expressed his pessimism about Senegal’s chances, stating, “We must put an end to the 2014 World Cup. Based on what was seen and demonstrated by this Senegal team against the Elephants, qualifying for the World Cup is a dream.” Ndao believes that despite having individual talents, Senegal lacks the cohesion and teamwork required to compete with the best in Africa.

Ndao pointed out that around 54 players have been tested and summoned since Alain Giresse’s arrival in Senegal in January 2013, yet the coach still struggles to find a cohesive starting eleven.

Alasanne Seck, another former player, echoed the sentiment, suggesting that the team lacks spirit and calling for a reevaluation of how the team is managed.

Some voices have also raised concerns about the seriousness of qualifying ahead of the Ivorians, who have a more established football history with almost 20 years of existence between the Sol Béni academy and numerous international selections.

The return match between the Lions and Elephants is scheduled in Morocco on November 16, 2013. The disappointment and criticism following the first-leg defeat have intensified the pressure on the Senegalese team as they approach the crucial return fixture.
