Badalona hail Al Ahly friendly as ‘historic football celebration’

Spanish club Badalona have described their forthcoming friendly against Al Ahly as “a match for history” as both teams prepare for the start of the new season.

The match is being treated by Badalona as a major occasion and an important part of their preparations. In statements published on their official social media accounts, the club said Al Ahly were one of the biggest clubs in the world and the biggest in Africa.

Badalona also highlighted Al Ahly’s extensive record of success, noting that the Egyptian club have won the CAF Champions League 13 times and collected more than 120 trophies across different competitions.

The Spanish side thanked Al Ahly for their cooperation in making the fixture possible and said the game would be a special football celebration that would remain in the memory.

Badalona concluded their statement by confirming that they were ready for the challenge, with the fixture forming part of their efforts to reach their best level before the new league campaign begins.

The friendly is part of Al Ahly’s training camp in Spain, which began on Thursday and will run until 19 August. The camp also includes a meeting with FC Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Al Ahly finished last season’s Egyptian Premier League campaign in third place with 53 points. They will be aiming to reclaim the league title in the new season.

Their league campaign is scheduled to begin on Sunday, 23 August, when they face Eastern Company ENPPI at Cairo International Stadium.

Al Ahly will also enter the last-32 stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, where they will face the winner of the tie between Somali club Mogadishu and Uganda’s Kitara.

The first legs of the last-32 ties are scheduled to take place between 16 and 18 October, with the return matches due to be played between 23 and 25 October.

Badalona’s description of the friendly as “a match for history” reflects the significance the club attach to hosting Al Ahly during their pre-season programme. The Egyptian side’s continental record and collection of more than 120 titles were central to the Spanish club’s assessment of the fixture.

Al Ahly’s preparations therefore include both the Badalona friendly and the planned match against FC Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy before the domestic and African campaigns get under way.
