‘No one can buy my silence’ – Morocco’s Benatia makes shocking Marseille revelations

Former Olympique Marseille sporting director Mehdi Benatia has opened up about his controversial departure from the French club, making a series of explosive claims about the problems he faced during his time at the Ligue 1 side.

In an interview with France Football, the Moroccan football figure admitted responsibility for some of Marseille’s struggles but also launched a strong defence of his record, while criticising former club president Pablo Longoria and some players.

Benatia said he accepted his share of the blame for the club’s failures, including their Champions League disappointment and inability to find consistent form, but rejected claims that he was responsible for Marseille’s wider financial problems.

Benatia admits mistakes at Marseille

The former Morocco international revealed that his biggest regret was withdrawing his decision to resign in February, saying he should have stood by his initial choice.

He acknowledged that the club struggled during his tenure and accepted responsibility for failing to help Marseille escape what he described as a difficult period.

“I have already failed. When the coach decided to leave because he was unable to get the team to perform consistently in two consecutive matches, I, as the sporting director, take my share of this failure without hesitation.”

Moroccan rejects blame for financial issues

However, Benatia strongly rejected suggestions that he was responsible for Marseille’s financial difficulties and transfer problems.

He questioned criticism directed at him over the club having a large number of players available for sale, insisting that Marseille’s transfer challenges existed long before his arrival.

“As for those who write gloatingly that Benatia is the one who left Marseille in this financial predicament, with 15 out of 23 players up for sale, I ask them: Where was my responsibility? The club witnessed 35 transfer deals in every window long before I arrived.”

Accuses players of lacking professionalism

One of the most controversial parts of Benatia’s interview involved his criticism of some Marseille players, whom he accused of failing to show the required level of commitment.

He claimed certain players were selective about when they performed and defended his approach of demanding greater professionalism.

“When I speak frankly, they accuse me of exaggeration. But let me make it clear: don’t mess with real professional players.”

Benatia also recalled seeing footage of Marseille players celebrating during their pre-season training camp in Ivory Coast, a moment he said frustrated him because of the club’s difficult circumstances.

“I watched videos of the players at their training camp in Ivory Coast this summer, dancing and singing joyfully. Ask the owner, McCourt, if he feels like singing and celebrating in these dire circumstances.”

Claims betrayal before PSG clash

Benatia also reflected on a difficult period before Marseille’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain in Kuwait, describing the events surrounding that match as a moment of deep disappointment.

The game ended 2-2 before Marseille lost on penalties after a 4-1 shootout defeat, with Benatia appearing to suggest there were internal issues affecting the club.

‘Truth cannot be bought’

The Moroccan, who previously enjoyed a successful playing career with clubs including Bayern Munich and Juventus, insisted he left Marseille without seeking financial rewards or signing confidentiality agreements.

“The difference between me and others is that I didn’t ask for anything when I left, and I didn’t sign any silence agreements. No one can buy my silence. What I will reveal is very valuable because the truth is priceless.”

Benatia’s full interview is expected to attract major attention in French football, with his comments likely to fuel further debate about the challenges facing one of France’s biggest clubs.
