Pyramids FC to face Gor Mahia in CAF Champions League preliminary round

Egyptian giants Pyramids FC have discovered their opponent in the first preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League following the official draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo on Thursday.

The Egyptian side will face Kenyan powerhouse Gor Mahia in the round of 64 as they begin their quest for continental success in Africa’s premier club competition.

Pyramids earned their place in the Champions League after finishing as runners-up in the Egyptian Premier League last season, joining champions Zamalek as Egypt’s representatives in the competition.

The draw has handed Pyramids a challenging but exciting opening fixture against one of Kenya’s most successful clubs. Gor Mahia, known for their strong domestic pedigree and passionate support base, will be aiming to compete strongly against the Egyptian side and secure progression to the next stage.

Pyramids, however, head into the tie with growing confidence after establishing themselves as one of Egypt’s strongest clubs in recent years. The club has invested heavily in building a competitive squad and has emerged as a consistent challenger in both domestic and continental competitions.

The Cairo-based club has also gained valuable African experience through previous appearances in CAF tournaments, and they will be targeting a deep run in this season’s Champions League campaign.

The CAF preliminary round draw, held at the federation’s headquarters in Cairo, produced several intriguing matchups as clubs from across the continent begin their journey towards the group stage.

The winner of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League will receive a record prize of US$6 million, providing additional motivation for participating teams as they compete for Africa’s most prestigious club trophy.

CAF has also introduced financial support measures for clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds. Teams that exit the competition at this stage will receive a solidarity grant of US$100,000 as part of the governing body’s continued efforts to strengthen club football and support participants across the continent.

Pyramids will now turn their attention to preparations for their two-legged tie against Gor Mahia, with the Egyptian club hoping to navigate the early rounds and challenge Africa’s established giants for continental honours.

With the likes of Zamalek, Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns and other top clubs competing for glory, the 2026/27 CAF Champions League promises another exciting battle for supremacy across Africa.
