Nampalys Mendy outlines ambitions after joining FC Metz

Senegal international Nampalys Mendy says the opportunity to help FC Metz secure an immediate return to Ligue 1 was a major factor behind his decision to join the French club following his departure from Watford.

The experienced midfielder was officially introduced to the media on Wednesday at FC Metz’s training centre in Frescaty, where he spoke about his ambitions, his physical condition and the role he hopes to play both on and off the pitch.

Having arrived as a free agent, Mendy believes he has joined a club with clear ambitions despite its recent relegation from the French top flight.

Asked why he chose FC Metz, the former Watford midfielder said:

“FC Metz is a great club, with a rich history; many good players have come through here. And I’ve had the chance to be in contact with some of the current players. It’s a club that resonates with me; it’s an ambitious club, recently relegated from Ligue 1 and aiming for promotion next season.

We know that, obviously, it won’t be easy, but it’s a challenge I’m eager to take on. Going down and then back up, we know that’s very difficult. But I’m here to contribute what I can to achieve that. But anyway, talking is all well and good, but you have to prove it on the pitch. So whatever I say today, the important thing is to be ready and lead by example, especially on the field.”

Mendy also addressed questions about his readiness to feature in Saturday’s match against Guingamp, admitting he is still working towards full fitness after recently joining the squad.

“To be perfectly honest with you, this is only my second week here, and I’m just getting back into group training. So I don’t think I’m 100% ready yet, but I’m doing everything I can to be as fit as possible. In any case, we’re working hard in training, and I think I’m being well looked after by the staff.”

The 33-year-old believes his experience can also benefit the younger members of the squad as Metz pursue promotion.

“I think I can contribute through my character and experience, and I think I’ll talk a lot to the younger players. But I also think I’m well supported here; there are many players with a lot of experience.

It’s a great challenge to take on. But we’ve been through this ourselves: we had the example of some former players who were there for us, so if we can do the same thing for the younger players today, I’d be delighted.”

Mendy also highlighted the long-standing connection between FC Metz and Senegal, a relationship that made the move even more meaningful to him.

“There is a very strong link between FC Metz and Senegal. I hope it will last as long as possible. And there are some very good Senegalese players who have played here and are still here.”

The former Ligue 2 champion with AS Monaco now begins a new chapter in Moselle, aiming to use his experience to help FC Metz achieve their objective of returning to France’s top division.
