Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango explains decision to join Stellenbosch FC

Newly-signed Stellenbosch FC defender Given Msimango has revealed that the club’s ambition, professionalism and desire to compete for major honours were key factors behind his decision to make the switch to the Cape Winelands outfit.

The experienced centre-back recently completed a move from Kaizer Chiefs as part of a player exchange agreement involving Ashley Du Preez and Langelihle Phili. While Msimango and Du Preez joined Stellenbosch FC, Phili moved in the opposite direction to Naturena.

The transfer marks a fresh chapter in Msimango’s career, and the defender is excited by the direction in which Stellenbosch are heading after establishing themselves as one of South Africa’s fastest-growing clubs.

Speaking after completing his move, Msimango highlighted the positive environment at the club, praising the management, coaching staff and the winning mentality that convinced him to join Stellies.

“It feels great to be part of Stellenbosch FC,” said Msimango. “This is a great environment with good management, fantastic coaching staff, and a team that wants to compete, which are all ingredients you need for success.”

The defender also pointed to the club’s recent achievements on the continental stage as further evidence of its growth and ambition.

Having featured in the CAF Confederation Cup in recent seasons, Stellenbosch have continued to raise their profile both domestically and across Africa, something that appealed strongly to Msimango as he weighed up his future.

“Stellenbosch is an ambitious team that wants to compete and win things. The team recently competed in the CAF Confederation Cup, and I want to compete with the club at the highest level and try to reach those heights again.”

The 28-year-old arrives with valuable Premier Soccer League experience and is expected to add leadership, defensive stability and quality to Steve Barker’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Msimango has established himself as one of the league’s reliable defenders over the years and will be eager to help Stellenbosch continue their upward trajectory as they challenge on multiple fronts.

The former Kaizer Chiefs defender has also set personal targets for the season, stressing the importance of consistency and contributing to the team’s collective success.

“I want to stay consistent with my performances and try to help the team as much as I can. I’m here to work hard for the club, and I’ve already received messages of support from our fans, so I hope to be able to make them happy this season.”
