Arsenal agree £75m deal to sign Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes – reports

Premier League champions Arsenal have agreed a deal worth £75m (R1.7bn) to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, according to British media reports.

Sky Sports reported that Arsenal had reached an agreement with Newcastle after improving their initial offer for the 28-year-old Brazil midfielder. The first bid from the London club was rejected earlier this week.

Reuters has contacted both Arsenal and Newcastle United for confirmation of the reported agreement.

Guimaraes had previously informed Newcastle that he wanted to move to Arsenal if a suitable offer was made, according to reports. Newcastle had been determined to keep their captain, who still has two years left on his contract at St James’ Park, with the club also holding an option to extend the deal by a further year.

The proposed transfer would bring one of Newcastle’s most influential players to Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s side prepare to defend their Premier League title and compete in Europe.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle from French club Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022. Since then, he has made 195 appearances in all competitions and scored 31 goals.

He also played a central role in Newcastle ending their long wait for domestic silverware. As captain, Guimaraes led the club to League Cup success in 2025.

His departure would represent another significant setback for Newcastle, who have already seen key players Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave, while manager Eddie Howe has also departed.

The midfielder has remained a regular member of the Brazil squad in recent years and represented his country at the 2026 World Cup.

A move to Arsenal would give Guimaraes the opportunity to continue competing at the highest level in England while adding further experience and quality to Arteta’s midfield. Arsenal, meanwhile, would strengthen their squad as they seek to retain the Premier League crown and make progress in European competition.

Newcastle’s reported decision to accept the improved offer follows their earlier efforts to retain the player. Guimaraes’ contract position had given the club some protection, but his reported preference for a move to Arsenal has now contributed to the two clubs reaching an agreement.

The deal remains subject to confirmation by Arsenal and Newcastle United.
