Stellenbosch FC sign Kaizer Chiefs defender Gopolang Taunyana

Stellenbosch FC have signed 20-year-old defender Gopolang Taunyana from Kaizer Chiefs, with the young player set to wear the number 21 shirt as he aims to establish himself in the first team under head coach Gavin Hunt.

Taunyana arrives at the Cape Winelands club after playing a role in a successful period for South African youth football. He was part of the Amajita team that won both the COSAFA competition and the U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The defender also featured for the Kaizer Chiefs reserves side that won the DStv Diski Challenge title two seasons ago. His move gives Stellenbosch FC another developing player with experience of success at both domestic reserve and international youth level.

Taunyana first attracted attention as a teenage referee at the Engen competition. However, it was not long before he demonstrated that he could make an impression as a player as well.

The defender said he was grateful for the opportunity to join a club whose reputation for developing young footballers influenced his decision.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, for the opportunity, because I am very excited to join Stellenbosch FC,” Taunyana said on the Stellies website.

“This is a team that is well known for development and having great facilities and coaches, so I’m grateful to be here.

“Growing as a player and a person is the most important thing for me, and I felt that this was the right step for my career and the right environment for me to grow. This is an environment where a lot of players have shone in the past, so I’m excited to go on that journey now as well.

“For the team, the thing that makes people the happiest is to compete with the best, win trophies and ultimately succeed as a team, so I hope to be able to look back one day and say we achieved that together.”

The move places Taunyana in an environment he believes will support both his footballing and personal development. He highlighted Stellenbosch FC’s facilities, coaching staff and record of helping players progress as key reasons for viewing the transfer as the correct next step in his career.

He will now compete for a place in Hunt’s first-team squad, with the number 21 shirt assigned to him as he begins his time with Stellenbosch FC. The club’s experienced head coach will oversee his efforts to secure a regular starting position.

Taunyana’s arrival follows his recent achievements with Amajita and the Kaizer Chiefs reserves, where he was part of the team that lifted the DStv Diski Challenge title two seasons ago.
