Liverpool rule out Jarell Quansah return despite growing defensive crisis

Liverpool have ruled out a move to re-sign Jarell Quansah despite mounting defensive concerns ahead of the new Premier League season.

Manager Andoni Iraola is facing a shortage of defensive options after a series of fitness setbacks and departures, but the club is not expected to activate its buy-back agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the academy graduate.

According to talkSPORT, Liverpool have no plans to bring Quansah back, despite holding an option to re-sign the centre-back for £70 million.

The decision comes at a time when the Reds are increasingly stretched at the back. Joe Gomez’s pre-season injury has compounded their problems, while Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet are still working their way back to full fitness.

There are also concerns over the workload of captain Virgil van Dijk, with Liverpool keen to carefully manage the veteran defender throughout the campaign.

The situation has been further complicated by uncertainty over Conor Bradley’s fitness ahead of the season opener, while Jeremie Frimpong suffered a knock during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Liverpool have also had to adjust following the departures of Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate this summer, leaving Iraola with limited defensive depth as preparations intensify.

Transfer market expected to provide solution

Rather than revisit a deal for Quansah, Liverpool are expected to explore other options in the transfer market before the window closes.

Iraola is believed to be assessing potential reinforcements as he looks to ensure his squad is equipped for a demanding campaign across domestic and European competitions.

The Spaniard still has three pre-season fixtures at Anfield to evaluate his players and finalise his plans before Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle United on August 23.

With defensive numbers dwindling, pressure is growing on the Reds to strengthen before competitive action gets underway, even if Quansah is not part of those plans.
