Bayer Leverkusen explore move to re-sign Moussa Diaby from Al-Ittihad

Bayer Leverkusen are working on a deal to bring Moussa Diaby back to Germany, with talks reportedly underway between the Bundesliga club and Saudi side Al-Ittihad.

According to Sky Sport Deutschland, discussions over the French winger’s return are progressing, although an agreement has yet to be reached.

The transfer could reportedly be completed for less than €30 million, paving the way for Diaby to return to the club where he enjoyed some of the most successful years of his career.

Familiar face targeted by new coach

Leverkusen’s new head coach, Carles Martínez Novell, is believed to be eager to add the 27-year-old to his squad as he shapes his team for the upcoming season.

The former Toulouse manager reportedly sees Diaby as a perfect fit for his preferred 4-3-3 formation, with the Frenchman capable of operating on either wing.

A return to Leverkusen would reunite Diaby with a club where he established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most dangerous attackers between 2019 and 2023.

During his first spell with the German side, he made 172 appearances, scoring 49 goals and contributing 47 assists.

Successful spell in Saudi Arabia

Diaby left Aston Villa for Al-Ittihad two years ago and quickly became an important player for the Saudi club.

Since arriving in the Middle East, the Paris-born winger has featured in 71 matches, scoring 11 goals and providing 31 assists.

He also helped Al-Ittihad win two trophies during his time in Saudi Arabia, further enhancing his reputation as one of France’s most exciting attacking talents.

European return on the horizon

Although negotiations are still ongoing, Leverkusen’s interest suggests that Diaby could soon be on his way back to European football.

The winger’s experience in Germany, England and Saudi Arabia makes him an attractive option as Leverkusen look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.

If a deal is completed, Diaby would return to familiar surroundings with the task of helping Leverkusen challenge for major honours once again.
