CAF Executive Committee to discuss major football developments on Thursday

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee is set to hold a virtual meeting on Thursday, with a wide range of key football matters across the continent expected to dominate the agenda.

The meeting will be chaired by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe as the continental football governing body reviews ongoing competitions, future tournaments, financial initiatives and administrative matters.

One of the major discussion points will be updates on the ongoing preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), alongside progress reports on the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The committee will also assess preparations for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup seasons, including competition structures and organisational matters for Africa’s premier club competitions.

The CAF Super Cup will also feature on the agenda, with officials expected to receive updates on the fixture involving the winners of the Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Youth football development will receive significant attention, with discussions scheduled on the U23 Africa Cup of Nations, the U20 AFCON 2027 to be hosted by Ghana, the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup, the 2027 U17 AFCON and the newly introduced U17 Girls AFCON competition.

The committee will further review the CAF Women’s Champions League, one of the fastest-growing competitions in African football, as CAF continues efforts to strengthen the women’s game across the continent.

The prestigious CAF Awards 2026, scheduled to take place in Nigeria, will also be discussed, with updates expected on preparations for the annual celebration of Africa’s football excellence.

Future tournament hosting plans will form another key part of the meeting, as CAF considers the bidding processes for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Members of the Executive Committee are also expected to deliberate on the proposed format of the African Nations League for the 2029, 2031 and 2033 editions, as well as approve the bidding process for countries interested in hosting the competition.

Financial matters will also come under scrutiny, including discussions surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal and the proposed expansion of football development funding on the continent.

CAF officials will also review allowances and per diems for referees, match officials, Video Assistant Referees (VAR) operators and match commissioners as part of efforts to improve the administration and professionalism of competitions.

The meeting will conclude with reports from CAF’s judicial bodies, including updates from the Appeal Board and Disciplinary Committee on ongoing and completed cases.

The decisions taken during the virtual meeting are expected to shape several major CAF competitions and development initiatives in the coming years.
