Barcelona assess Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi after Frenkie de Jong injury

FC Barcelona are considering a move for Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi as a possible replacement for Frenkie de Jong, according to reports in the Spanish press.

The Morocco international is attracting interest from Barca as they look for an alternative in midfield after De Jong suffered an injury expected to keep him out for a long period.

Ounahi, 26, is viewed as a potential stand-in for the Netherlands international. He currently has a release clause worth €25m, meaning FC Barcelona would have to pay that amount to secure his services if they decide to pursue the interest.

The reported valuation makes Ounahi a significant financial commitment for the Catalan club, with his clause setting a clear price for any potential deal. The Spanish reports identify the Girona player as one of the options being considered to cover the absence of De Jong.

Ounahi is an established Morocco international and represented the Atlas Lions at the 2026 World Cup. His involvement with the national team is part of the profile that has brought him to the attention of FC Barcelona, alongside his role in Girona’s midfield.

For Barca, the situation has been prompted by the injury to De Jong. The Dutch midfielder’s expected lengthy absence has created a need for another player in the position, with Ounahi now being linked with a move to the club.

There is no indication in the report of an agreement between FC Barcelona and Girona, or of a formal offer being made. At this stage, Ounahi is described as a player of interest and as a possible replacement for De Jong.

The €25m release clause would nevertheless give the situation a defined financial framework. Should FC Barcelona decide that Ounahi is the right option, the clause would represent the cost attached to bringing the Morocco midfielder to the club.

Ounahi’s possible move would therefore depend on two factors: De Jong’s prolonged absence and Barca’s willingness to meet the Girona player’s release figure. For now, the Spanish media reports place the 26-year-old among the midfielders being considered by FC Barcelona.
