Kaizer Chiefs renew interest in Faiz Abrahams after signing Langelihle Phili

Kaizer Chiefs have revived their interest in Stellenbosch FC winger Faiz Abrahams after completing the signing of his former team-mate Langelihle Phili.

Chiefs confirmed Phili’s arrival from Stellenbosch FC on Monday following lengthy discussions with the Cape Winelands club. The agreement has now prompted the Naturena-based side to reassess their position on Abrahams, who remains highly regarded for his performances despite a series of off-field issues.

Abrahams was previously linked with a move away from Stellenbosch after he went absent without leave at the beginning of July and failed to report for pre-season training. Orlando Pirates were understood to be interested in signing the winger at the time.

Stellenbosch were reportedly prepared to consider offers for Abrahams and entertained a proposal from Pirates that included Kabelo Dlamini moving in the opposite direction as part of a swap deal. However, the negotiations broke down in the final stages after the Buccaneers player reportedly indicated that he was unwilling to move to the Winelands.

Chiefs had also monitored Abrahams during the off-season. Sources indicate, however, that the club was discouraged by the negative publicity surrounding the junior international.

Reports stated that Abrahams ended his contract with Israeli club Hapoel Kfar Saba in February and did not complete the full one-year loan spell agreed with Stellenbosch FC. Those circumstances contributed to Chiefs initially stepping back from any potential move.

The club’s interest has now been revived following the negotiations that led to Phili joining Amakhosi. There is currently no formal offer from Chiefs, but their interest is genuine and has been communicated to Stellenbosch.

Abrahams remains under contract with Stellenbosch, who are entitled to consider proposals from other clubs. Pirates remain among the possible destinations after coming close to completing a deal for the player previously.

Chiefs have already strengthened their squad with two other signings from Stellenbosch during this transfer window. Thapelo Mokobodi and Mthetheleli Mthiyane have both joined the Naturena-based club.

The future of Abrahams for the 2026/27 season remains unresolved, with both Chiefs and Pirates still in the picture. Any club that signs him would also need to allow him time to readjust to group training and match preparation.

The winger has been training on his own, meaning he would require a period of integration before becoming fully involved with a team environment. His ability on the pitch continues to attract interest, but his recent absence from Stellenbosch and the issues surrounding his loan spell remain important considerations for any potential move.
