Jose Peseiro still interested in Algeria job despite no talks with federation

Jose Peseiro remains willing to consider becoming Algeria manager, despite there having been no contact between the Portuguese coach and the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) over the position.

Speculation about the future of Algeria’s head coach has quickly placed Peseiro among the possible candidates to replace Vladimir Petkovic. The FAF is reportedly considering appointing a coach from the Spanish or Portuguese school of football as it begins a new cycle.

However, according to exclusive information from Africafoot, no discussions or negotiations have taken place between the federation and Peseiro so far.

People close to the 66-year-old have denied that even preliminary talks have been held with Algerian officials. Peseiro is currently managing Al-Ula, a Saudi Arabian second-tier club, and has recently extended his contract there.

Although working in the second tier represents an unusual stage in his career, the Portuguese coach was persuaded to remain by the strength of the club’s project and the efforts made to keep him.

His new contract does not mean the possibility of taking charge of Algeria has been ruled out. Peseiro’s representatives say he still has “a great deal of affection” for the national team, and that he would be prepared to consider an approach if one were made.

Having guided Nigeria to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, Peseiro would be particularly pleased to take charge of another major African football nation.

Previous discussions nearly led to agreement

Peseiro’s interest in Algeria is not new. About three years ago, he came close to being appointed as the Fennecs’ manager.

Talks with the FAF had progressed to the point where an agreement was almost reached. The federation ultimately chose Vladimir Petkovic instead, with financial considerations among the reasons for that decision. Petkovic’s demands were lower than those made by Peseiro.

That earlier disappointment is not believed to have caused any lasting resentment. Peseiro remains open to listening to a possible proposal from Algeria.

For now, there is no indication that the FAF has decided to reopen contact with the former Nigeria manager. Any agreement would also depend on several factors, beginning with Peseiro’s contractual situation at Al-Ula.

The Portuguese coach’s position means the Algeria route remains a credible possibility, even though no formal approach has been made. His experience of African football, his run to the Africa Cup of Nations final with Nigeria and his understanding of the demands of elite international management could make him an attractive option to some Algeria supporters.

Three years after an initial agreement came close but ultimately failed to materialise, Peseiro has not closed the door on the Fennecs.
