Joseph Hungbo swaps Wigan for Swindon Town in League Two loan move

English-Nigerian winger Joseph Hungbo has joined Swindon Town from Wigan on loan, bringing a left-footed wide player to the League Two club for the 2026-27 season.

The 26-year-old completed the move on 3 August 2026, with the loan running until 31 May 2027. No transfer fee has been recorded for the switch.

Hungbo arrives after a spell with Wigan, who play in League One. He has experience across the English and Scottish leagues, as well as in Germany, and has made 56 League One appearances, providing four assists.

The right winger has also played 28 times in the Scottish Premiership, scoring six goals and registering four assists. In England’s Championship, he has three goals and one assist from 26 appearances.

His career has included spells with Rotherham and Huddersfield on loan, while he joined Wigan from 1. FC Nuremberg in January 2025 for €300,000. Before moving to Germany, Hungbo spent time with Watford, including loan periods at Ross County and Aldershot.

Hungbo began his senior career with Palace Under-23s after progressing through Crystal Palace’s youth system. He joined Watford’s development setup on a free transfer in July 2019 and moved into the club’s senior structure three years later.

Born in London on 15 January 2000, Hungbo is listed as holding English and Nigerian nationality. He stands 1.73m tall and operates primarily on the right side of attack.

Swindon competed in League Two during the 2025-26 season, while Wigan played in League One, meaning Hungbo will move into a different division after leaving the Latics. His previous experience in the Championship, League One and Scottish Premiership adds a broad range of senior football to Swindon’s squad.

The move also continues a career that has featured several changes of club and loan spells since Hungbo left Palace’s academy. His latest switch is his first recorded transfer to Swindon Town and gives the club a player with experience in multiple domestic competitions.

Hungbo’s loan to Swindon Town was completed on 3 August 2026 and is scheduled to end on 31 May 2027.
