Fermin Lopez nearing full Barcelona return after injury lay-off
Fermin Lopez has entered the final stage of his rehabilitation and is showing strong physical and technical form at Barcelona’s pre-season camp at St George’s Park in England.
The 23-year-old midfielder was a surprise inclusion in the squad that travelled to England on 27 July, having recovered fully from the right-foot injury he suffered in May.
Lopez fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during Barcelona’s La Liga match against Real Betis. The injury required surgery and ruled him out of the World Cup, dealing a significant psychological blow to a player who had become an important part of the club’s plans.
His return began with a gradual programme of light physical work at Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training ground in Sant Joan Despi. After the squad arrived in England, Lopez was able to rejoin full team training.
Barcelona say he has coped well with the intensity of the sessions. Lopez has taken part in every workout at a high tempo, offering further evidence that he has regained his physical and technical fitness.
The midfielder’s absence from the World Cup affected him heavily, but that disappointment has strengthened his determination to return at the highest possible level. He is now working to ensure he begins the new campaign in the best condition.
Flick adopts cautious approach
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is expected to give Lopez some playing time in the club’s next friendly as part of a three-team tournament in Italy. Barcelona are due to face Udinese and Nottingham Forest in the competition.
Flick’s main objective is to have Lopez ready for the start of the 2026-27 La Liga season, when Barcelona open their campaign against Elche on 23 August.
However, the Spain international’s involvement will depend on his progress and medical condition. Flick does not intend to rush the player back, despite the positive signs shown during the training camp.
Lopez is regarded as an important component of Flick’s Barcelona project after an impressive 2025-26 season, particularly during its closing stages.
The La Masia graduate offers the German manager considerable tactical flexibility. He can operate as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder or a winger, while also possessing a strong instinct for making late runs into the penalty area.
His defensive work-rate, energy and willingness to press add further value, while his ability to connect midfield and attack allows him to help Barcelona move the ball between the lines. Lopez also has the technical quality to break through defensive structures.
Those qualities made his injury particularly damaging for Barcelona and his enforced World Cup absence especially difficult personally. Yet his progress at St George’s Park suggests the club’s versatile midfielder is close to completing his comeback, with his next test likely to come in pre-season action in Italy.
