Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdel-Karim nets brace for Barcelona first team in friendly
Young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdel-Karim announced himself on the senior stage by scoring twice for FC Barcelona in their 2-2 friendly draw against Birmingham City.
The 18-year-old striker delivered an eye-catching performance, netting both of Barcelona’s goals in a match that further strengthened his growing reputation as one of the brightest prospects in African football.
Meanwhile, the English outfit prevailed 3-2 over the Spanish powerhouse in the ensuing penalty shootout.
Abdel-Karim’s breakthrough comes at the end of a remarkable summer for the Egyptian youngster. After impressing during a loan spell with Barcelona, the Catalan giants moved quickly to secure his services on a permanent basis from Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, handing him a contract that will keep him at the club until 2029.
His rise has been swift. Last season, the talented attacker featured 11 times for Barcelona’s Under-19 side, scoring six goals and playing a key role in helping the team secure the league title. Those performances convinced the club’s coaching staff to include him in first-team preseason preparations, where he has continued to make a strong impression.
Widely regarded as one of Egypt’s most exciting young footballers, Abdel-Karim has already attracted comparisons with Egyptian icon Mohamed Salah. Many supporters and observers have labelled him the “new Salah” due to his immense potential and the similarities between his early career trajectory and that of the Liverpool star.
The teenager’s stock rose even higher after representing Egypt at the recent FIFA World Cup, where he made four appearances from the bench.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was full of praise for the teenager following his match-winning display.
“Hamza possesses exceptional abilities, like all the other young players, but the most important thing is proving these abilities on the pitch,” Flick said. “Working with young players is a pleasure for me.”
Abdel-Karim could not hide his excitement after opening his account for Barcelona’s senior side.
“It’s a wonderful and unique feeling,” the Egyptian forward said after the match.
The youngster shortened his summer holiday in order to join Barcelona’s preseason preparations earlier than scheduled. The club plans to give him further opportunities in upcoming friendlies as he looks to convince Flick that he deserves a place in the first-team squad for the new campaign.
Despite Barcelona’s continued efforts to strengthen their attacking options in the transfer market, Abdel-Karim’s impressive performances have ensured he remains firmly in contention. With confidence growing and momentum on his side, the Egyptian teenager will now be aiming to maintain his excellent form throughout preseason and secure a spot in Barcelona’s squad when the new Spanish league season gets underway.
For a player already drawing comparisons to one of Africa’s greatest footballers, scoring his first goals in Barcelona colours may prove to be just the beginning of a very promising journey.
