WAFCON 2026: Nigeria lose influential duo Tosin Demehin and Jennifer Echegini for Egypt clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will have to navigate a crucial Group C showdown against Egypt without two key members of their squad after defender Tosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini were ruled out through suspension.

The pair will miss Wednesday night’s decisive Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) encounter following disciplinary sanctions incurred during Nigeria’s narrow victory over Zambia, creating a significant challenge for head coach Justine Madugu as he prepares his side for their final group-stage assignment.

The Super Falcons secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Zambia in their previous outing, but the result came at a cost. Demehin was shown a straight red card in the 40th minute after bringing down Zambia captain Barbra Banda, who had broken through on goal and appeared destined to score. The dismissal forced Nigeria to play a large portion of the match with ten players, although they ultimately held firm to claim all three points.

As a consequence of the red card, the defender is automatically suspended for the clash against Egypt, depriving Madugu of one of his regular options at the heart of the Nigerian defence.

Echegini will also be unavailable after receiving a yellow card during the same contest. The booking was her second caution of the tournament, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary regulations.

The absence of the two players is expected to force adjustments in both defence and midfield, with Madugu likely to rely on the depth within his squad to ensure Nigeria remain competitive in a fixture that could determine their path in the competition.
