Nigeria defender Emmanuel Utaka joins Rivers United on free transfer

Nigeria centre-back Emmanuel Utaka has joined Rivers United from Nasarawa United on a free transfer, completing a move within the Nigerian Professional Football League.

Utaka, 19, made the switch on 2 August 2026 after leaving Nasarawa United, with Rivers United confirming his arrival for the new campaign. The defender becomes part of a Rivers United squad competing in the same domestic division in which he has already gained senior experience.

The move gives Rivers United a young central defender with 45 NPFL appearances to his name. Utaka has played 3,514 minutes in the competition, an average of more than 78 minutes per appearance, although his career record lists no goals or assists.

Born on 15 June 2007, Utaka has spent his senior career in Nigeria’s top domestic competition. His transfer from Nasarawa United to Rivers United is his first recorded move between NPFL clubs and represents a change of team without a fee being paid.

Utaka’s preferred position is centre-back, placing him in the defensive area of a Rivers United side that has acquired a player with experience of regular league football despite his age. His recorded market value is €50,000, while the completed transfer was made at no cost.

The agreement does not include a recorded contract expiry date, so the length of Utaka’s new deal has not been stated. The transfer history confirms that he left Nasarawa United and joined Rivers United on the same day, with both clubs competing in the NPFL.
