Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé expresses disappointment over contract extension snub  

Former Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé has broken his silence following the decision by the Ivory Coast Football Federation not to renew his contract as manager of the national team.

Faé was shown the exit door last Friday, bringing an unexpected end to a successful spell in charge of the Ivorian national side.

The former Ivory Coast international saw his contract expire, and despite ongoing discussions over a possible extension, the federation ultimately decided against continuing their partnership with the coach who guided the country to Africa Cup of Nations glory.

“After the World Cup, we were in talks about an extension. But on Friday morning, the officials called me to tell me that, in the end, there would be no extension, without giving any further explanation,” Faé said as quoted by L’Équipe.

“I’m naturally disappointed, but I accept this decision. The president and I were, after all, already preparing for the next training camp.”

Faé also expressed appreciation to the federation for trusting him with one of the biggest jobs in African football, despite having no previous experience as a professional head coach before taking charge of the national team.

“I remain grateful to the Federation for giving me my chance, even though I had no professional experience,” he added.

The decision marks the end of a remarkable rise for Faé, whose coaching journey took an unexpected turn during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Initially serving as assistant coach, Faé was promoted to interim manager after the departure of Jean-Louis Gasset during the tournament. With Ivory Coast facing elimination after a difficult group stage, he took responsibility and inspired a dramatic turnaround.

Under his leadership, the Elephants overcame several challenges, defeating some of Africa’s strongest teams on their way to lifting the AFCON trophy on home soil.
