Bryan Mbeumo double fires Man United to Snapdragon Cup triumph over Atletico Atletico

Bryan Mbeumo scored twice as Manchester United came from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Stockholm and lift the Snapdragon Cup, capping another encouraging pre-season performance ahead of the new campaign.

Michael Carrick’s side recovered from an early setback to dominate large spells of the contest, with Mbeumo leading the comeback and several summer arrivals delivering eye-catching displays.

United fell behind in the opening stages when Arnau Ortiz caught out the defence with a cross-shot that drifted beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner, handing Atletico an early advantage.

Rather than panic, the Premier League side quickly settled into their rhythm and controlled possession, pinning the Spanish club back for much of the first half.

Mbeumo delivers decisive response

United’s pressure eventually paid off when Shea Lacey was brought down inside the penalty area, allowing Mbeumo to step up and calmly convert from the spot to restore parity.

The Cameroon international completed the turnaround after the break following excellent work from Jack Fletcher, who won possession high up the pitch before creating the opening for the forward to finish clinically.

The brace continued Mbeumo’s impressive pre-season form and offered another glimpse of the attacking quality he could bring to Old Trafford this season.

Defence and midfield impress Carrick

While Mbeumo grabbed the headlines, United’s overall performance will have pleased Carrick just as much.

Leny Yoro looked assured in an unfamiliar right-back role, producing a disciplined display that largely nullified the threat of Ademola Lookman throughout the match.

In midfield, Mason Mount enjoyed one of his most influential performances of pre-season after being deployed in a deeper role. The England international controlled possession, linked play effectively and dictated the tempo whenever United were in command.

Andrey Santos also continued to build momentum with another composed outing, showing maturity on the ball and helping United maintain control during key phases of the game.

Positive signs before the new season

Lifting the Snapdragon Cup will matter less than the performance itself, but United leave Stockholm with plenty of optimism.

After recovering from an early blow, Carrick’s men displayed resilience, attacking intent and defensive organisation against strong opposition.
