Azzedine Ounahi among Barcelona targets following Frenkie de Jong setback
Barcelona have identified Morocco midfielder Azzedine Ounahi as a potential option to strengthen their squad following Frenkie de Jong’s knee injury.
The Catalan club are exploring midfield solutions ahead of the new season, with Ounahi’s profile being considered as they look to reinforce the area responsible for controlling possession and creating attacking moves.
The Morocco international is not a new name for Barcelona. His performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he played a key role in Morocco’s historic campaign, previously attracted attention from the Spanish giants.
However, a move to Camp Nou did not materialise at the time.
Ounahi, who is currently at Girona, has now reappeared among Barcelona’s possible targets. According to information from Spanish programme El Chiringuito, later reported by Mountakhab, the midfielder is one of the players being assessed by the club’s sporting department.
Despite the interest, there is currently no indication that Barcelona have submitted an official offer or entered advanced negotiations for the 26-year-old.
The club are continuing to study several options before the start of the season as they look to add depth and quality to their midfield.
Ounahi’s qualities remain highly valued across Europe. The Moroccan is recognised for his technical ability, awareness and his ability to progress the ball through midfield.
His capacity to “break lines” — a phrase used to describe a player’s ability to overcome opponents through accurate passing or effective dribbling — is considered one of his biggest strengths.
Barcelona’s interest comes as they assess how best to deal with De Jong’s absence and maintain balance in their midfield options.
While no agreement is currently close, Ounahi’s name has once again entered discussions at the Catalan club as they continue their search for possible reinforcements.
The coming weeks will determine whether Barcelona’s interest develops into a concrete move or whether they decide to pursue another option before the new campaign begins.
