Orlando Pirates name starting XI for Betway Premiership opener against Milford FC

Orlando Pirates begin their defence of the Betway Premiership title against newly promoted Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.

The reigning champions enter the match as the side expected to set the pace after ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-year hold on the league title on the final day of last season.

It was a landmark campaign for the Buccaneers, who won the league for the first time in 14 years. Their success was made even more significant by victories in the MTN8 and Carling Knockout, completing a domestic treble.

Orlando Pirates will start the new season under Moroccan-born coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, with the pressure of defending their title added to the expectations created by last season’s outstanding run of domestic form.

The champions have spent part of their pre-season preparing in Spain. Their final match on tour ended in a 1-0 defeat by Saudi Pro League side FC Neom last Friday.

Milford FC, meanwhile, have reached the top flight after coming through the promotion play-offs. They secured promotion by overcoming Magesi FC and Cape Town City.

The newly promoted side also enjoyed an impressive Nedbank Cup campaign last season, reaching the semi-finals and gaining valuable exposure before stepping into the Premiership.

Saturday’s fixture will nevertheless be a historic occasion for Milford, who will face Orlando Pirates for the first time in the club’s existence.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15h30.
