John Paintsil has made a fresh start by signing with Santos FC, a South African second division team. The club officially confirmed the transfer on its website, expressing satisfaction in acquiring such an experienced player for their squad, as stated by Santos FC President Goolam Allie.
Paintsil, the second most capped player in the Ghana national team with 88 caps, has an impressive international career, participating in the Olympic Games, African Nations Cups, and two World Cups. The Ghanaian international had been without a club since June after the termination of his contract with Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv.
The journey to this point has not been without challenges for Paintsil. In February of the previous year, he became embroiled in a marital scandal that had repercussions on his career. Accusations arose regarding his relationships with individuals in South Africa, leading to a turbulent situation within his family. The scandal reached a peak when Paintsil was accused by his wife of assault, spending a night in prison before being released when the charges were withdrawn.
Subsequently, Paintsil faced difficulties in securing a stable position, failing tests in England, including at Millwall. After a period of training with Santos since October 1, he has now joined the club in the National First Division, currently sitting at the 7th position.
The Ghanaian defender was in contact with Polokwane City, a first-division club, earlier in the week but ultimately opted for Santos as he aims to revive his career. The question now remains whether Paintsil will make a return to the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, marking a potential resurgence in his football journey.
