Pirates strengthen youth project with three Midlands Academy signings

Orlando Pirates have added three promising youngsters from Midlands Academy as the club continues to build for the future alongside its preparations to defend the Betway Premiership title.

The Soweto club have secured the signatures of Olwethu Mkhize, Banele Nxumalo and Vusimuzi Ntshangase, further expanding a development programme designed to produce players capable of progressing into the senior side.

The move has taken place quietly amid greater attention on Pirates’ first-team recruitment during the current transfer window. However, the arrivals underline the importance the Buccaneers continue to place on identifying and developing young talent.

Pirates have built a reputation for recruiting some of South Africa’s most promising prospects before they become established names. Mkhize, Nxumalo and Ntshangase are the latest players to join an increasingly ambitious youth project at the club.

The strategy has become a clear feature of Pirates’ planning in recent years, with the club seeking to combine immediate success with a reliable pathway from development football to the first team.

That philosophy was particularly visible during Jose Riveiro’s successful spell in charge. A number of young players were given opportunities alongside more experienced campaigners as Pirates enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their history.

The approach is expected to continue under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Frenchman has also demonstrated a willingness to involve emerging players as Pirates begin a new era after completing a historic domestic treble last season.

Pirates are preparing to defend their Betway Premiership crown while also reshaping their senior squad. The club have already confirmed the signings of Sebastian Pedersen, Gamphani Lungu, Neo Rapoo, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Sbangani Zulu, Bohlale Ngwato, Matome Mmolai and Thapelo Mokobodi.

Aphiwe Baliti has also joined the club, although he has subsequently been loaned back to Siwelele FC to continue his development.

The latest academy additions show that Pirates’ recruitment plans extend beyond the demands of the upcoming campaign. While the club remain focused on competing for trophies in the present, the development of players for the longer term remains central to their footballing structure.

Mkhize, Nxumalo and Ntshangase will now become part of a system that has increasingly sought to prepare young players for senior football. Their recruitment gives Pirates three more prospects to assess and develop as the club attempts to maintain its position among South Africa’s leading teams.

The signings therefore represent more than a single piece of youth recruitment. They are another indication that Pirates are attempting to create a sustained supply of talent for the first team, while continuing to strengthen the squad needed to compete for honours.
