Obassa begins new Nigerian chapter with Kano Pillars

Benin international goalkeeper Serge Obassa has joined Kano Pillars Football Club after signing a one-season contract with the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side.

Kano Pillars confirmed the transfer on its Instagram account, completing the move for the former Remo Stars goalkeeper. Obassa will continue his career in Nigeria after establishing himself as one of the league’s most dependable goalkeepers during his time with Remo Stars.

The 2024/25 NPFL champion had been with Remo Stars since August 2024, having previously played in Benin’s domestic championship. He represented AS Cotonou during the 2022/23 season before moving to Buffles du Borgou for the 2023/24 campaign.

Obassa made an immediate impact after arriving in Nigeria. He became an important member of the Remo Stars squad and played a significant role in the club’s NPFL title success in the 2024/25 season.

His contribution was underlined by a run of 15 clean sheets in the league, a record that highlighted his consistency throughout the campaign. Those performances led Remo Stars to extend his contract in August 2025.

The goalkeeper also progressed at international level during the same period. He made his debut for Benin’s national team, the Guepards, in November 2025 under manager Gernot Rohr.

Obassa has made two appearances for Benin so far. He was also included in the group of goalkeepers selected for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, alongside Marcel Dandjinou and Saturnin Allagbe.

His move to Kano Pillars will reunite him with Daniel Ogunmodede, the coach who previously worked with him at Remo Stars. Ogunmodede is now in charge of the technical side at Kano Pillars, known by their nickname “Sai Masu Gida”.

The transfer gives Obassa a fresh challenge while allowing him to remain in a competition he knows well. His previous spell in the NPFL helped establish his reputation, with his performances for Remo Stars contributing to both the club’s title-winning campaign and his international breakthrough.

Kano Pillars will now hope the Benin goalkeeper can reproduce that form in their colours. For Obassa, the move represents the next stage of a rapid rise that began in the Benin championship, continued with a successful transition to Nigeria and has now taken him to a new NPFL club.
