Orlando Pirates begin Betway Premiership title defence as new season kicks off

Orlando Pirates will begin their defence of the Betway Premiership title with a home match against fellow newcomers Milford United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The fixture is one of the opening points of interest as the new Betway Premiership season gets under way this weekend, with Pirates starting the campaign with the responsibility of protecting the championship trophy they won last season.

Their opponents, Milford United, are among the rookies entering the competition. The match will therefore bring together the reigning champions and a side beginning life at this level, creating a notable contrast for the opening weekend.

The return of league football was also the focus of the 115th episode of theArena Sports Show, where coaches discussed their ambitions and the challenges facing them at the start of the season.

Siwelele FC coach Lehlohonolo Seema said he was targeting an improvement on the 10th-place finish his team recorded last season. The experienced coach outlined that objective during an appearance on the programme with host Mahlatse Mphahlele.

Seema also disclosed that this campaign marked his first pre-season as a coach. That experience comes as he prepares Siwelele FC for a new Betway Premiership season and seeks to guide the club higher than its position in the previous campaign.

Joining Seema on the show was Abram Mongoya of Kruger United, who is preparing to coach in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for the first time.

Mongoya led the Mpumalanga-based club to automatic promotion to the PSL from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. His arrival in the top flight follows Kruger United’s successful promotion campaign and gives him the opportunity to take charge at the highest level for the first time.

The contrasting situations discussed on the programme reflect the range of storylines surrounding the new season. While Pirates begin with the immediate task of defending their title, Siwelele FC are aiming to improve on last term’s 10th-place finish, and Kruger United enter the PSL after securing automatic promotion.

For Milford United, Saturday’s match at Orlando Stadium will provide an opening-day meeting with the reigning champions as the club begins its campaign among the competition’s new entrants.
