Golden Arrows sign ‘unmatched’ speedster Mbesu Gcina Nkosi from Phezulu FC

Golden Arrows have completed the signing of highly-rated winger Mbesu Gcina Nkosi from Mpumalanga-based ABC Motsepe League club Phezulu FC.

The Durban side have moved to secure a player who scored 28 goals during his two seasons with Phezulu, where his departure has already been confirmed by the club.

Phezulu head coach Sihle “Mboma” Thwala said Nkosi’s performances, pace and professionalism had made him an attractive prospect before his move to the top level.

“I was lucky to get that boy. He is from a small town, Amsterdam, here in Mpumalanga. Besides what he does on the field, he is a disciplined, dedicated boy who works very hard to improve every day,” Thwala told KickOff.

Thwala believes Golden Arrows have signed a player capable of making an immediate impact, while also developing into an important talent for the future.

“That boy has unmatched speed and skill. He is a big problem to wingbacks. I have never coached a boy who plays at such high speed. What I like about him is his eye for goal once he reaches the box. Arrows have got themselves a real talent here, one for the future. He is of real quality.”

Nkosi’s form came during a highly productive period for Phezulu, whose strong campaign last season attracted attention from clubs across the country.

According to Thwala, Golden Arrows had been monitoring the winger since Phezulu’s successful run in the league. The club’s performances also brought a number of scouts and representatives to their matches, creating opportunities for several of their players.

“From what I gather, Arrows have been following him since we had a good run in our league last season. Because of that, the team attracted many people who came to watch our matches. We had the likes of Sekhukhune United wanting our players, Orlando Pirates’ DDC [DStv Diski Challenge] wanting players, and Casric Stars interested in our players after we played friendly games with them,” he added.

Thwala explained that Nkosi’s route to Golden Arrows began when an intermediary watched him in action and continued to attend Phezulu matches.

“In Nkosi’s case, one particular guy who is an agent of some sort came while we were playing, liked the way he played, and he’s been coming to our games. I remember the boy calling me, saying, ‘Hey, coach, there’s this guy who wants to try me at Arrows.’ He was assessed for a week, and they were impressed.”

The move gives Nkosi the opportunity to continue his career with Golden Arrows after establishing himself as one of Phezulu’s most productive players.

Abafana Bes’thende begin their season at home against Chippa United at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off at 15:00.

They will then prepare for a high-profile MTN8 quarter-final against Kaizer Chiefs the following weekend.
