‘I had wonderful years’ – Hugo Broos looks back on a remarkable Bafana Bafana era

Hugo Broos has described his time leading Bafana Bafana as “wonderful years” as he officially brought his successful spell with South Africa’s senior national team to an end.

The Belgian tactician leaves his role after almost five years in charge, having decided against renewing his contract with the South African Football Association (Safa) as he prepares for retirement.

For Broos, the journey has been defined by special memories, strong relationships and a remarkable turnaround of a national team that had lost its way before his arrival.

Speaking at his farewell press conference at Safa House on Friday, the 73-year-old reflected on his tenure with satisfaction, particularly highlighting the connection he built with his players.

Broos admitted that stepping away was not an easy decision, but explained that the demands of international football and time away from his family influenced his decision not to continue until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

Despite leaving the dugout, the experienced coach expressed his hope that Bafana Bafana would continue progressing and that the foundations established during his tenure would help the team reach greater heights.

“I hope things will go well for Bafana, and the necessary steps will be taken to make sure that players become even better.”

He also thanked the people who supported him during his time in South Africa, including Safa officials and the country’s sports leadership.

“I wish my successor all the best going forward, and I want to thank Safa president Danny Jordaan and the rest of the Safa staff and the minister of sport Gayton McKenzie for his enthusiastic support.”

The revival of Bafana Bafana

Broos’ tenure will be remembered as a period of revival for South African football.
