Malick Fofana: Belgium winger at Lyon linked with RB Leipzig move

Belgium winger Malick Fofana, currently at Lyon, is being linked with a move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig as the German club explore options to strengthen their attack. The 21-year-old left-sided forward, who also has Guinean nationality, is under contract with the Ligue 1 club until June 2028, meaning any deal would likely require a significant fee.

Fofana has emerged as a key figure at Lyon since arriving from KAA Gent in January 2024, when the French side paid €19.5 million to secure his signature. His progress has been reflected in a sharp rise in valuation, with his current market value now standing at around €30 million.

Leipzig’s interest is understood to be focused on Fofana’s productivity in senior European football, with the right-footed winger scoring six goals and providing two assists in 14 Europa League appearances. He has also built up consistent domestic experience in France, making 58 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon and reaching double figures for goals.

Born in Aalst in March 2005 and developed in the Gent academy from a young age, Fofana broke into top-flight football in Belgium before his move to France. Standing at 1.69m, he has been used predominantly on the left of the attack for Lyon, wearing the No 11 shirt.

With two years remaining on his deal and Lyon in a strong contractual position, any negotiations with Leipzig are likely to be complex, and there has been no indication so far that an agreement is close. For now, Fofana remains tied to Lyon on a long-term contract running to the summer of 2028.
