WAFCON 2026: Josephine Bonsu urges Ghanaians to back Black Queens after winning start

Black Queens defender Josephine Bonsu has appealed to Ghanaians to continue supporting the national team after their 2-0 victory over Cape Verde in their opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Bonsu, who was named Player of the Match for an outstanding defensive performance, played a key role as Ghana opened their Group D campaign with a clean sheet and three valuable points in Morocco.

Doris Boaduwaa gave the Black Queens an early lead before Cape Verde defender Eleia Vieira turned the ball into her own net in the second half, sealing victory for Coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s side.

After the match, the defender thanked Ghanaians for their encouragement and urged them to remain behind the team as they continue their quest for continental glory.

“Ghanaians, please continue to support us. We need your help, and we need you, especially when we come back to Accra to celebrate the gold. It was a great game, and we are looking forward to having more beautiful games like this and continuing to win our games.”

The victory marked a positive response from the Black Queens after they lost their opening fixture at the previous WAFCON tournament.

The Black Queens will face Cameroon in their second group match on August 2 as they look to build on their impressive opening performance.
