Steven Cann: Wales-South Africa goalkeeper joins Trethomas on free transfer

Trethomas have added experienced Wales-South Africa goalkeeper Steven Cann to their squad after the 38-year-old completed a free transfer from Morriston. The move sees the veteran shot-stopper join the Cymru South club ahead of the new campaign.

Cann arrives at Trethomas after a spell with Morriston, whom he joined from Afan Lido in March 2024, also on a free transfer. The right-footed keeper, who stands at 1.88m, has spent much of his career in Welsh football and now brings that know-how to his latest club.

Born in January 1988, Cann has built a long career across the Welsh pyramid following his early years in England. After progressing through Derby County’s youth and reserve sides, he made his first senior move to Rotherham United in 2007, again on a free transfer.

A switch to Aberystwyth Town in 2009 marked the start of a sustained spell in Wales, with further free transfers to Carmarthen Town and Port Talbot Town as he established himself as a regular presence in goal. Later stints at Briton Ferry, Merthyr Town, Pontypridd and multiple returns to Afan Lido underlined his familiarity with the domestic scene.

Cann has also previously experienced a period without a club, leaving Merthyr Town in November 2021 before signing for Pontypridd in January 2022. From there he continued his circuit of Welsh sides, building a reputation as a reliable and well-travelled goalkeeper.

The move to Trethomas, confirmed on 30 July 2026, is a permanent free transfer from Morriston.
